The College of Pharmacists of Manitoba (CPhM) is seeking feedback from registrants on several proposed updates to the Joint Practice Direction: Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions. These updates reflect an important step in interprofessional collaboration with midwives, as well as provide clarity surrounding references to narcotics and controlled drugs.
Purpose of the Consultation
In summer 2025, CPhM met with the College of Midwives of Manitoba (CMM) to discuss their request to be added as a signatory to the Joint Practice Direction: Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions. In addition to being a signatory of this Joint Practice Direction, CMM has proposed provision requiring prescriptions from midwives to include a treatment goal/diagnosis/clinical indication.
Additionally, CPhM has observed that the wording in both the Joint Practice Direction and its Appendix refers to “narcotics and controlled substances,” even though benzodiazepines are not included in the drug list in the Appendix. CPhM would like to clarify this wording at this time, in order to avoid confusion.
Proposed Amendments
CPhM invites your feedback on the following proposed changes:
- Addition of the College of Midwives of Manitoba (CMM) to the Joint Practice Direction.
- Addition of a section requiring prescriptions from midwives to include a treatment goal and/or diagnosis and/or clinical indication.
- Amending the section requiring total quantity and interval between part-fills to be specified for any medication on the M3P list, as well as any medication classified federally as a narcotic or controlled drug (previously this section said “narcotic or controlled substance”). Amending Appendix A to refer only to narcotic or controlled drugs.
