Acknowledging National Indigenous Peoples Day

June is National Indigenous History Month, and Tuesday, June 21, 2022, was Canada’s 26th annual National Indigenous Peoples Day. The College of Pharmacists of Manitoba (CPhM) encourages pharmacy professionals and all Manitobans to take time to celebrate and learn about the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First NationsInuit and Métis Peoples. It is also a good time to reflect on the tragedy and continuing trauma residential schools have caused and to honour the grieving survivors, their families and communities across Canada.

CPhM encourages staff, Council members, pharmacy professionals and other pharmacy staff and health professionals to learn about the social injustice that exists for Indigenous peoples in healthcare and make a commitment to better understand why these inequalities exist. Understanding the existing inequities is a necessary first step to setting a path for positive change.

As an initial step to better understanding the impacts of colonization and Indigenous-specific racism in Canada, all CPhM staff completed the San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training program. CPhM Council members are in the process of completing the same program.

As we strive for a more culturally safe and inclusive health system, free of racism and discrimination, CPhM understands that this is also an individual journey. It is through awareness and education that we develop empathy and understanding so that we can begin to meaningfully contribute to Reconciliation.

Please consider the following resources as a starting point on your individual path to Truth and Reconciliation:
