Prioritizing Prescription Review for Enhanced Patient Safety
Timely and efficient prescription review is essential to patient safety and the smooth operation of pharmacy services. Delays in reviewing and processing prescriptions, whether electronic or paper-based, can affect patients’ timely access to essential medications, especially those with urgent therapeutic needs.
Pharmacy professionals are encouraged to prioritize timely prescription review in their daily workflow. Regular monitoring of prescription queues throughout the day can help minimize processing delays and prevent unnecessary refill requests, which may lead to additional workload and increased redundancies for prescribers and pharmacists alike.
An efficient pharmacy workflow supports timely and safe prescription services, improves staff satisfaction, and reduces stress. Recognizing that each pharmacy’s workflow is unique, depending on factors such as services offered, staff roles, and layout, pharmacy managers and staff may find it valuable to review the six steps outlined in the SafetyIQ blog on Pharmacy Workflow Improvements, which offers practical strategies for optimizing workflow to better meet patient care needs.
