Pharmacists can expand their scope of practice in the areas of prescribing, drug or vaccine administration, and ordering of screening and diagnostic testing by successfully completing the requisite Council-approved education, training, and application process.
Requirements
Please note, prescribing and administering drugs for hormonal contraception has not yet been implemented in Manitoba.
Once the regulatory amendments are in effect, to prescribe a drug for conceptive control, a pharmacist must

- complete the “Hormonal Contraception Independent Study Program for Manitoba Pharmacists” including the “Fundamentals of Prescribing for Manitoba Pharmacists” presentation;
- The Fundamentals of Prescribing for Manitoba Pharmacists presentation is available at the following link: https://youtu.be/VqR_ed6v4F8
- The presentation slides are available here.
- read the product monographs of the drugs that the pharmacist is prescribing and review other resources when necessary or appropriate; and
- apply to the CPhM for authorization to prescribe for hormonal contraception.
To administer hormonal contraceptives by injection, pharmacists must have Certification of Injection Authorization from CPhM. Please see the webpage for more information: Administering Drugs and Vaccines by Injection | College of Pharmacists of Manitoba.
CPhM does not charge an administrative fee for the Hormonal Contraception Independent Study Program for Manitoba Pharmacists, but pharmacists may need to pay subscription fees to access some of the required or recommended resources.
To Apply:
Submit the following documents to registration@cphm.ca mailbox and use subject line: Hormonal Contraception Application – Your Name – Licence #
- The Application Form is available in your Registrant Portal via the following:
